Oopps, that's a mistake!
What is a mistake?A verb. A noun. A wrong action or statement proceeding from faulty judgment, inadequate knowledge, or inattention. An error or fault resulting from defective judgment, deficient knowledge, or carelessness. A misconception or misunderstanding.
Can a piece of writing be considered a mistake? Some say yes. I say no. If there is a typo in the writing, it does not make it a mistake. Writing is like a life, it grows, changes and transforms into something other than what the first plan had been. But to call that a mistake is the mistake. The process and creation of writing cultivates the work for the finished product. If everything started out as perfect where could the character grow from? Some writing will come on the tide of inspiration or after hours waiting for the tide to come in and deciding just to start writing. Fix the typos, rewrite the sentences, rewrite again, and keeping writing, but never see what you write as a mistake.
"Don't be too harsh to these poems until they're typed. I always think typescript lends some sort of certainty: at least, if the things are bad then, they appear to be bad with conviction." ~Dylan Thomas, letter to Vernon Watkins, March 1938
